Compositions and Arrangements and Performances and Musicality and Analysis: Combining a Bunch of Big Words to Make Pretty Sounds
Monday July 29, 2024 10:30am - 11:30am MDT
TBD
"What turns a good performance into a GREAT performance? What makes the hairs on the back of our neck stand up, even if we're only halfway through listening to a song? What makes us Google ""how to download YouTube video as mp3 no ads totally legal no copyright infringement intended"" after watching a particularly compelling quartet or chorus performance?

In this class, we'll ask (and answer) all these rhetorical questions, and more! Join us as we analyze our favorite barbershop performances, and go on the journey from original composition, to idea, to arrangement, to icon. We'll explore all things musicality, from melody and harmony, to rhythm and meter, to lyric and embellishment, and how they combine their powers (Captain Planet-style) to create something legendary (How I Met Your Mother-style)!

Basic arranging experience is helpful, but not required. Intermediate music theory experience is recommended as we discuss concepts by way of nerdy vocabulary."

The Arranging Journey 2: Fundamentals of Harmonization (2 hour)
Monday July 29, 2024 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
TBD
This class will start with a review of the chords in the barbershop chord vocabulary as these are the building blocks to writing an arrangement. Then we'll learn a systematic process to consider what chords could be used for each melody note. This method guides our choices and leads us to an outcome that sounds natural and is quite singable. Then we'll take a song and work through it as a class, utilizing this method and completing a simple arrangement together by the end of the week.

The Arranging Journey 3: Musical development (2 hours)
Monday July 29, 2024 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
TBD
A popular song or musical theater number can rely upon things like rote repetition and differing instrumentation in order to maintain interest throughout a song. In a barbershop arrangement of said song, however, the arranger must invent ways to maintain interest without those tools: in our terms, "develop the arrangement." In this seminar, student arrangers will explore the process of development once a basic harmonization and texture for a song is achieved. Students will arrange a song throughout the course of the week (expect light homework!), sharing their work with the class and getting feedback from the instructor and other students. Strong prior knowledge in barbershop music theory is advised, and some arranging experience is preferred.

Conducting Course Pool
Monday July 29, 2024 10:30am - 12:30pm MDT
TBA
In our never-ending quest to streamline the process of helping students determine the appropriate
conducting level for a successful Directors College experience, we are incorporating a Conducting Course
Pool.

The process is as follows:

1. If you are interested in any Basic Conducting Class, you can sign up for that class without going
through the Pool. If you have already registered for a Basic class through the pool, you can
remove yourself from that pool, dry yourself off, and sign up for the Basic Class in your preferred
time slot.

2. If you are interested in an Intermediate or Advanced Conducting Class, sign up for the
Conducting Course Pool that aligns with the time slot of your preference.

3. Students interested in Intermediate or Advanced Conducting will need to send me (my contact
information is below in my signature line) an email that lists your conducting/music teaching
experiences and provides link to or attachment of a video that demonstrates your understanding
and ability to conduct the techniques in the previous level’s rubric. You can find the rubrics on the
Conducting Course Pool site. In other words,
a) If you are interested in the Intermediate Class, your video should show your skill with the
techniques in the Basic Conducting Rubric.
b) If you are interested in the Advanced Class, your video should show your skill with the
techniques in Intermediate Rubric.

The purpose is to be able to focus the instruction in each class toward students of similar
conducting experience.

4. I will evaluate your video and experience using the appropriate rubric and assign you to the level
that will give you the best opportunity for success as you move forward.
Remember that these conducting classes are part of an ongoing, life-long process—not a once-and-done
and now you’re Leonard Bernstein proposition. There are many technical things to learn in both the Basic
and Intermediate levels—especially the Intermediate. Our ultimate goal is to take each conductor from
they are to where they want to be in the future artistically. And, by the way, the process is unending…

I hope I’ve communicated clearly, there are often unique perspectives that cloud any issue. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me. I’m willing to connect by email, phone, or Zoom.

Musical Elements in Comedy and Comedic Elements in Music
Monday July 29, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm MDT
TBD
"Have you ever laughed at a performance and then you were like, ""but why?"" And after that you were like, ""also how?"" Then this class is for you! Join me, self-proclaimed ""arranger"" Anthony Bartholomew, as we watch and discuss the great parodies we know and love, and break down why they worked, what didn't, and how you can apply this to your own parody writing and arranging.

We will then frame these ideas in the context of using melody, harmony, embellishment, rhythm, and rhyme, so that you can write and arrange your own comedic idea in an effective and musically satisfying manner. Oh, and it could be funny, too.

Time permitting, we'll write a parody of our own that one of us (me, probably?) will take credit for!

This class is for anyone who is interested in learning more about mixing barbershop arranging with comedy writing. Basic arranging/theory experience is recommended. Netflix special not required, but Amazon Prime special strongly preferred."

remove yourself from that pool, dry yourself off, and sign up for the Basic Class in your preferred
time slot.

Arranging for Directors
Monday July 29, 2024 3:15pm - 4:15pm MDT
TBD
Often a director has good theory skills but is not someone who arranges barbershop music. Then when you find a chart that you and the chorus really like, there are some challenging spots (a tricky key change, some notes too high or too low for the group to sing well, overly complicated rhythms, etc) and you need to enlist the help of an arranger to make these minor edits. It can be hard to find someone for this and it can delay the learning process considerably. This class will examine what you would need to consider in order to confidently make changes like these yourself, thereby opening up more possibilities for the chorus and less time spent on those few bars in the original chart that the chorus really struggles with.

Thematic Arranging: Bringing Lyrics, Melody, and Rhythm to life
Monday July 29, 2024 4:30pm - 5:30pm MDT
TBD
Barbershop arrangers often feature strong thematic elements in their work: they can highlight melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, lyrical, or parodic devices. It may not always be practical to pigeon-hole an entire arrangement into one of these specific categories, but study of these elements is beneficial. In this course, students will explore numerous barbershop arrangements (visually and aurally), observing how arrangers highlight said elements in various ways. As such, students will learn about tools they can utilize in their own arranging work.

Conducting Course Pool
Monday July 29, 2024 4:30pm - 6:30pm MDT

Know just enough about music theory to get started, but don't know where to start? Are the new "Arranging Barbershop" volumes still on your Amazon Wishlist? Want to understand how to arrange in the barbershop style without learning all those pesky "details"? This is the elective for you! It's fast-paced, and we are going to fly through this thing, but by the end of our time you will definitely be able to say, "I attended that class!"

Note: this elective is only 45 minutes long, and we'll cover a lot of stuff. It is strongly recommended that you have an understanding of music theory, especially chords, progressions, and arranging barbershop. Just kidding on the last one, but you feel me.
