In our never-ending quest to streamline the process of helping students determine the appropriate
conducting level for a successful Directors College experience, we are incorporating a Conducting Course
Pool.

The process is as follows:

1. If you are interested in any Basic Conducting Class, you can sign up for that class without going
through the Pool. If you have already registered for a Basic class through the pool, you can
remove yourself from that pool, dry yourself off, and sign up for the Basic Class in your preferred
time slot.

2. If you are interested in an Intermediate or Advanced Conducting Class, sign up for the
Conducting Course Pool that aligns with the time slot of your preference.

3. Students interested in Intermediate or Advanced Conducting will need to send me (my contact
information is below in my signature line) an email that lists your conducting/music teaching
experiences and provides link to or attachment of a video that demonstrates your understanding
and ability to conduct the techniques in the previous level’s rubric. You can find the rubrics on the
Conducting Course Pool site. In other words,
a) If you are interested in the Intermediate Class, your video should show your skill with the
techniques in the Basic Conducting Rubric.
b) If you are interested in the Advanced Class, your video should show your skill with the
techniques in Intermediate Rubric.

The purpose is to be able to focus the instruction in each class toward students of similar
conducting experience.

4. I will evaluate your video and experience using the appropriate rubric and assign you to the level
that will give you the best opportunity for success as you move forward.
Remember that these conducting classes are part of an ongoing, life-long process—not a once-and-done
and now you’re Leonard Bernstein proposition. There are many technical things to learn in both the Basic
and Intermediate levels—especially the Intermediate. Our ultimate goal is to take each conductor from
they are to where they want to be in the future artistically. And, by the way, the process is unending…

I hope I’ve communicated clearly, there are often unique perspectives that cloud any issue. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me. I’m willing to connect by email, phone, or Zoom.
