Barb Jones

A Cappella York Chorus, Newmarket, Ontario
assistant director
Newmarket, Ontario, Canada
I'm fairly new to Barbershop singing myself, although I have sung in choirs and musicals since I was a child. My father was a barbershop singer with the Newmarket Chapter, the Upper Canada Chordsmen Chorus. He sadly passed away the year Everyone in Harmony was introduced, I joined BHS and applied to the Newmarket Chapter to see if they would be accepting female members. In January 2018 I was invited to join, and have enjoyed singing with the Chorus since then. In the summer of 2018 I took on the role of Secretary for the Chapter, remaining in the role until January 2022.
I am also a member of the Harmony Ranch Recreation Club in Ontario, where the Baldwin Blend Mixed Barbershop Chorus was created. We were thrilled to be part of the first North American chorus to be invited to sing at BinG! in April 2018.
Our Chorus shut down when the pandemic hit and during that time we, unfortunately, lost our Chorus Director. We managed to keep some members engaged with bi-weekly social Zoom meetings and did have some educational elements included. As Ontario is gradually coming out of the more stringent restrictions, we were honoured to have Dr. Ray Danley offer to direct our small chorus. We hope to get some practice in before he returns to his winter home in Mexico. At that time, he asked if I would be the assistant director while he is gone.
I have had numerous years directing elementary children's choirs while I was an elementary school teacher.  I have also directed children and adults in church choirs.  However, I am a little (?) apprehensive as I take on this new role.  Dr. Danley is a most patient and helpful director and I will learn so much from him.  I am still somewhat intimidated to be the one 'standing out front' with the members who have sung barbershop much longer than I. I am looking forward to the tips and advice these sessions will give me as I begin this new journey.
